Interview with Yves Guillemot in a Belgian Business Magazine (Trends), brought to my attention by a friend

      Interesting points :
      * Watch Dogs production cost was € 140 million, excluding marketing costs (I thought this was the amount INCLUDING marketing costs ?)

      * YG : “Delaying one game will normally not result in a net loss for that year” (Clearly, Watch Dogs was the exception 31/03/2014).

      * YG : “Watch Dogs delay was an accident, not something we want to make a habit out of”

      * “How will you avoid such ‘accidents’ in the future ?”
YG : “By reorganizing our studios, working faster, and obtaining the correct visual quality early in the production process. I know it is not an excuse, but new console cycle (Xbox, PS4) cost us a lot more time than we originally expected. Our developers needed time to get used to the complex programming of these new consoles.”

      * “Assassin’s Creed 1 was developed by a – for that time – exceptionally huge team. The game was financed for 37,5% by the Canadian tax payer (due to subsidies).”

      * “These subsidies will be lowered in the coming years, what are the consequences for your company ?”
YG : “It will be more expensive to make a game. But not substantially. At this moment, wages for developers are increasing by the minute due to the war for talent. When subsidies will be cut, some development companies will leave Québec and wages will go down. Moreover, we are producing games in Toronto, where subsidies are higher than Québec. Chances are, that Ubisoft Toronto will become bigger than Ubisoft Québec in the future. But we still have to make the calculation. There are lots of places in the world where we can make games.”

      * YG : (when discussing emerging markets) “The free to play model wasn’t as interesting as we thought it would be. “

      * YG : “In the emerging countries (for gaming anyway), such as Russia and China, a successful game in one country can be a total failure in another country.”

      * YG :“Xbox One and PS4 are being released in China. That’s an interesting development. But the focus there is much more on multiplayer/online-competition. You can’t just bring a European/American game and launch it in China, you must first develop the online-component.”

      * “Is there ANY interest in your current games in emerging markets ?”
YG : “ If you look at the number of illegal copies of our games circulating in emerging markets, I’d say we are rather very successful already.”

      @blubber @jean
Seule chose que j’ai du mal à interprêter, c’est la phrase : « YG : “Delaying one game will normally not result in a net loss for that year” (Clearly, Watch Dogs was the exception 31/03/2014). »

      Au contraire,
« Watch Dogs delay was an accident, not something we want to make a habit out of”

« Delaying one game will normally not result in a net loss for that year »
(= but the Watch Dogs year was an exception to that rule)
