Assassin’s Creed: Unity won’t be « compromised » by its microtransactions
« If we think it fits the gameplay or the brand, we’re willing to take those risks »

Assassin’s Creed: Unity is the latest game to let you « fast track » an unlocks system by spending real money, Ubisoft has revealed at Gamescom 2014. Speaking to OXM after a presentation, senior producer Vincent Pontbriand commented that this is « pretty much » as far as microtransactions go in the game, and assured us that the developer won’t adopt such models unless they make sense with the experience.

Exactly how the system works has yet to be explained in full – the build I saw wasn’t final – but it appears that you can spend money to « hack » unlocks such as gear rather than earning them through play.

Unity has been in development since 2010, and much has changed in that time as regards how games are paid for and distributed. « There’s a couple of things like that we’ll always have to be on the lookout for, » Pontbriand told me, when I asked whether there was pressure to take into account recent trends in monetisation.

« Companion apps, monetisation, other business models, digital only… We have to be reactive to these things, but not necessarily fundamentally change what we’re trying to do, » he continued.

« It depends. If we think it fits the gameplay, or the brand itself, the core values, we’re willing to take those risks. If not, then not. We’re not going to make any compromises. »

Unity is shaping up to be an enjoyable, sociable romp, which is something I never thought I’d say about anything related to the French Revolution. Check out my co-op hands-on if you haven’t already.
